Der englische WM-Kader
What do you think about the English World Cup squad? Anything you would have done differently? Is there a position that even concerns you a bit ahead of the tournament?
Overall, I am a little torn on the choices Thomas Tuchel has made. The absences of Phil Foden and Cole Palmer make sense, and players should not be picked based on loyalty, but that argument is lost when Jordan Henderson still gets picked.
The majority of English supporters just don’t understand why he is there, believing he is no more than a “cheerleader” nowadays, but clearly the manager sees something that us armchair managers do not, so we have to trust him.
For me, the biggest absence is arguably Harry Maguire, who has played well this season, and whose experience in big tournaments would be useful, but I feel that Tuchel is looking for more ball-playing centre backs, so I can see why Maguire didn’t get picked for the squad.
Wer sind die Unterschiedsspieler?
Which players could make the difference during the tournament, and why?
There are three/four players that I feel can make the difference in this tournament. Captain Harry Kane is an obvious selection. His record since joining FC Bayern is unbelievable and if he continues in the same vein of form, England will go far.
Elsewhere, I feel the Arsenal duo of Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka can help drive the team on. They have had an amazing season, so barring tiredness from a long season, I expect great things from them.
Defensively, the England side is a little weaker, compared to other areas, so John Stones is going to be a huge factor, if the team was to go deep into the tournament. He has battled injuries recently, so keeping him fit will be of massive importance, especially with a relatively inexperienced back line in terms of international tournaments.

Stärken & Schwächen Englands
Could you tell us about the biggest strengths and weaknesses of the English team. Is there something that could keep them from playing a successful tournament?
England’s central midfield is arguably its strongest asset. Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham are the stars of the show, but we have incredible depth, which saw Morgan Gibbs-White and Adam Wharton among those missing out.
We also have plenty of top class wingers too, Bukayo Saka has the right-side wrapped up, while on the left both Marcus Rashford and Anthony Gordon have been interchangeable. I mean how many sides can bring on a player like Eberechi Eze as a substitute?
If I am looking at weaknesses, the lack of high quality centre-backs has been an issue for a couple of years now. Marc Guehi and Ezri Konsa are good players, but still need to prove themselves in an England shirt, so the aforementioned over-reliance on John Stones is a concern.
Looking up top, after Harry Kane, no one has really cemented themselves in as his deputy. Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney offer something different, which in itself is great, but you could have made arguments for other players to be included too, so the biggest prayers from England fans will be that the captain does not get injured!
Die Personalie Thomas Tuchel
What’s your take on Thomas Tuchel? Do you think England is tactically on the same level as Spain, France or Argentina now?
Thomas Tuchel is a good manager, who has taken on one of the biggest challenges in football, and done so, knowing what the reaction would be as a foreigner too, so I have nothing negative to say about him.
I certainly think he brings a bit more to the table in terms of tactical knowledge than Gareth Southgate did, and I have to give him plenty of respect for trying different formations in his time so far, even when results were negative.
I think a combination of his tactical abilities, knowledge of the English game and the fact that many members of the current team have reached a Euro’s final in recent tournaments, means that there should be no fear when facing a big rival or one of the favourites.

Is Football Coming Home?
If you had to give just one reason, why will England win the 2026 World Cup or why won’t they?
I can give you a reason from both sides!
England will win the World Cup, because we have Harry Kane.
England will not win the World Cup because we will be over-reliant on Harry Kane.
